On Saturday 30th we held the first talk and discussion for conjunction 10, the speakers were curators Anna Francis, David Bethell, Ian Vines and Andrew Branscombe, and Artists Michael Branthwaite, Paul Rooney and Juneau Projects. A video of the talk will be available here soon.

Following the talk the audience were invited to airspace gallery to witness the first of two live performances by Juneau Projects…

Paul Rooney: Bookmark

At all of this years venues there is a chance for visitors to take away a piece of original artwork in the form of a multiple. Artist Paul Rooney has produced a printed bookmark, on which is written a self contained story, a modern parable of a librarian who discovers a bookmark which has extraordinary powers, one of which is that it seems to be able to stop time itself. The librarian does not use it’s powers ‘correctly’ however, and suffers the consequences. The lessons to be learnt from the parable are not clear and offer no obvious moral guidance.

SHOP

SHOP is a new space in Stoke Town, Stoke-on-Trent that has transformed an empty shop into a venue for a range of artists in residence, studio space, events and exhibitions.
SHOP aims to work with a mix of the most interesting and exciting local, regional and national artists and producers to bring a truly eclectic mix of artistic activity to suit all tastes. It plans to take over Stoke Town with site-specific interventions, a hub of interesting creativity inside the SHOP and a couple of parties along the way.
Anna Francis will host an exciting new project for SHOP ‘Talking City Live’ from Saturday 16 October – Saturday 30 October. The project sees Francis reviving her Talking City Agony Aunt, to host a chat show around the theme of regeneration and aiming to get under the skin of Stoke Town. This time ‘ASK ANNA’ will be asking the questions, talking to local residents, business owners, creative people and those involved in the regeneration. The show will celebrate all that is good about Stoke Town whilst demonstrating all that the town has to offer. The project will culminate in a series of programmes and tours.
SHOP is funded by Arts Council England & North Staffs Regeneration Partnership and supported by Blurb, Fierce, Urban Vision North Staffs, Staffordshire University, Wren Park and more.

Escape can take many forms. This exhibition explores how images of idyllic landscapes provide an escape from everyday reality. Contemporary and historical works have been brought together which embody, or in some cases undermine, this view of landscape. The show features paintings of the English countryside, various foreign locations and images that even escape from the confines of the Earth itself.

Learning from Glasgow The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery – Forum Theatre

The Conjunction team have invited key figures from organisations at the heart of cultural and artistic activity in Glasgow to speak about how it has developed the arts from the roots up and how this has made it into an internationally renowned city for the arts.
Speakers
Helen Moore and Chris Biddlecombe WASPS Studios’ Communications and Tenants Liaison officer and Property Projects officer. Consultation on artists studios – how to start, develop and progress them. Francis McKee Director of the CCA, Centre for Contemporary Art, Glasgow and previous director of Glasgow International. Consultation on outreach projects and supporting local artists, working with funding bodies and councils.
Tom Varley Transmission Gallery, an artist-run collective, that supports artists, gallerists and curators in the early stages of their careers, including individuals such as Toby Webster who runs the Modern Institute, one the UK’s most successful and high profile commercial contemporary art galleries.

Factory Nights is a series of inspiring working sessions for ANY visual artists, photographers, writers, poets, musicians, filmmakers and any other creatives! Factory Nights is not a discussion event, seminar or workshop. Factory Nights are free sessions that simply provide an opportunity for creative people to come together in an interesting venue and supportive environment to make work or initiate ideas. Artists can come to the sessions with something they have been working on or could start something brand new, inspired by the space.

NEW commissions/ NEW collaborations
Artists that attend Factory Nights will have the opportunity to submit a brief proposal to rednile for help with the development of a new idea or initiation of a new collaboration which has been inspired by a session. This commission will be showcased as part of the final week of Conjunction, more information will be provided on the Factory Night.

BACKGROUND: This four story Renaissance Styled building opened in the early 1900’s and was purpose built to house the United Kingdom Electrical Telegraph Company and now sits in the shadow of the much larger Concrete BT Building. The building is now grade 2 listed and still contains a number of original features and artefacts; this Factory Night includes exclusive access to the 4th floor loft space with glass roof and an introduction by local historian and writer Fred Hughes.

Tonight is preview night for conjunction 10. The evening will start at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery at 6.30pm, with a chance to view the exhibition and to meet and greet, as well as enjoying some refreshments. AirSpace Gallery will then open at 7.00pm where more refreshments will be available and the continuation of the biennial exhibitions.

The Big Draw | 21 October

The Big Draw: Escape to the Hidden Gardens The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and The Garden Festival Site 21 October 10am – 4pm
An opportunity to take part in drawing workshops on the site of the 1986 Garden Festival – location: 53° 1’47.63″N and 2°11’46.02″W. ‘Escape from the Urban Sprawl’ workshops will be taking place on the site from 10am or alternatively you can walk from The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery up to the Garden Festival site, with artist Brian Holdcroft. The walk will take place at 2pm and will leave from the foyer of the The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery.
