Michael Shaw: Q&A

To build on the insight we were given into Michael Shaw’s work at the Conjunction08 Panel Discussion on the 22nd November 2008. Michael is the next artist to be featured in our series of Q&A’s for the Biennial. So here goes…

What first interested you in the theme of FANTASTIC, FOUND and FAKE?

Themes are of less importance to me than the opportunity to engage with exciting spaces. Themes are by and large curate’s egg, or simply a means to bring together good works.

What is the name of your piece for the festival?

INF6

If you had to describe the piece in one sentence what would it be?

A clear inflatable ellipse within another clear inflatable ellipse

In your opinion, what has been the most exciting/interesting part of Conjunction 08?

The opportunity to work in the extraordinary Bethesda Chapel; with its awesome structure and internal architecture.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

A work in progress.

Who are your biggest influences?

Richard Serra, Donald Judd, Brancusi, Borromini, Donatello, Michelangelo, Bernini, + painters like Memling, Van Eyck, Rembrandt, Rogier van der Weyden.

Had you ever visited Stoke-on-Trent prior to your involvement with Conjunction?

Yes, to see the bottle kilns at the Gladstone museum.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone who wanted to practice professionally as an artist?

Commit.

What’s next for you?

Solo show ‘Virtually Sculpture’ at the Study Gallery in Poole commencing 6th December. In the studio, I am working on a series of chameleonic sculptures; breathing inflatables and some linear pieces made with stainless steel and RGB LEDs that change colour over time.
