To the casual observer Jan Dunning’s work seems to sit comfortably within the canon of landscape photography. On closer inspection the perfectibility of the terrain starts to trigger a sense of disquiet. Dunning has skilfully constructed a version of reality in microcosm, the qualities conjured by these exquisitely lit pinhole photographs operate somewhere between cinematic special effects and romantic painting.
